The ONE DROP Foundation believes that water is part of humanity’s collective heritageIt is a resource that is provided by nature and vital to all living things, and it must be preserved and accessible to all. Our challenge is twofold: we must ensure the world’s population has sufficient water in the present through proper distribution, while also preserving this precious resource for future generations.
The ONE DROP Foundation plans and undertakes its own projects. It does not accept funding requests. Projects are developed following a study carried out by experts in the field.
The ONE DROP Foundation is an independent organization administered by a Board of Directors that is responsible for ensuring adherence to the Foundation’s goals, providing strategic directions and approving annual plans and budgets. The Board is also responsible for assessing, on an annual basis, the outcome of the Foundation’s activities and approving its audited financial statements.
The ONE DROP Foundation has adopted a funding model based on partnerships and complementary interests with other organizations that share Guy Laliberté’s vision: fighting poverty around the world by giving everyone access to water and raising awareness of better usage practices in both the southern and northern hemispheres.
Funds are used to implement projects that give people access to water. The sustainability of these projects is ensured by contributions from the founder of the Cirque du Soleil, its employees and other financial partners.
Anyone can support the ONE DROP action by making a financial contribution to help further projects in both developing and developed countries.
The ONE DROP Foundation’s administrative costs are fully covered, thanks to a financial contribution from Cirque du Soleil and its founder, Guy Laliberté. This ensures that the full amount of your donation directly supports the Foundation’s field projects.
The ONE DROP Foundation is a registered charity in Canada. Its charitable registration number is 85342 3192 RR0001.
The ONE DROP Foundation’s activities concern access to fresh water and consequently do not deal directly with the oceans. However, since oceans are closely associated with the global water cycle, our efforts to preserve water and promote its responsible use do have an impact on our oceans.
The ONE DROP Foundation is based at Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters in Montreal, Canada. It does not have offices or branches in any other countries. Information on its programs or how to support its activities is available online by clicking here.
The ONE DROP Foundation is active in many countries through its field projects, its work to secure funding from international partners, and its development of awareness-raising projects.
At the time of its official launch in October 2007, the Foundation was conducting a pilot project in Nicaragua and had identified eight developing countries where it plans to carry out further field projects in the coming years: Honduras, El Salvador, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Every ONE DROP project must factor in the sociological, environmental and economic aspects of the community in which it is carried out. In keeping with the principles of sustainable development, ONE DROP projects have five goals: improving access to water, ensuring food security, increasing incomes of local peoples, promoting gender equality and community participation, and raising awareness of water-related issues.
ONE DROP selects the countries where it is active on the basis of four criteria designed to ensure lasting results for the communities involved:
a lack of access to water
good governance
an organized civil society
the possibility of achieving concrete, measurable results
