Just as the final preparations for the Expo were coming to an end, water shortages started taking on alarming proportions across Spain.

On June 25th and 26th in Zaragoza, Guy Laliberté and France Chrétien Desmarais—ONE DROP’s Founder and Vice-President, respectively—took the opportunity provided by the Water Tribune to announce the launch of the ONE DROP project in Honduras.
In July, ONE DROP joined its voice to that of others to pay tribute to civic-minded people all over the world who are acting to protect water and the environment in which they live.

ONE DROP was one of the hundreds of foundations from all over the world that came together in Washington in May to shape the future of philanthropy.

At the beginning of May, ONE DROP Founder Guy Laliberté and other Board Members, went to Estelí, Nicaragua, to see first-hand the positive impact of the PECAN project three years after its implementation. Seeing is believing.

For World Water Day 2008, Oxfam-Québec (http://www.oxfam.qc.ca/) had asked that the Quebec population show solidarity towards communities who do not have access to water by taking on the Day Without Water Challenge from March 19 to 22.

Today, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding with the ONE DROP Foundation and its partners, RBC and Oxfam, to undertake a three-year project towards access to safe drinking water in Honduras. This is the first project of the partnership agreement signed between the two organizations last October, in Montreal.

On World Water Day 2008, the City of Sherbrooke (www.ville.sherbrooke.qc.ca), located in Quebec, launched an awareness campaign to promote responsible use of water.

It is with much interest that ONE DROP Founder Guy Laliberté, Scientific Committee Chair Sylvie Paquerot and I joined 250 delegates from 84 countries, including 154 ministerial delegations from around the world, to discuss the challenges of our planet’s future.

Nowadays, about 8% of fresh water goes to supply basic domestic needs, while industrial requirements account for 38%, but water use varies widely from region to region. These recent figures show an increase in industrial uses compared with the late 80s, when they accounted for 20%.
Paul Laporte and his colleague Danielle Valiquette, who recently joined ONE DROP Foundation, have been working together on the deployment of the Honduras project. “Since December 2007, Danielle has been accompanying to Honduras. Her extensive experience in international development is much valued as we plan the project,” notes Paul.

The images presented were the work of PECAN technicians, young Nicaraguan men and women responsible for providing logistical help to beneficiary families. The artists had practically no experience in photography but were taught the basics of the art form at their request.

ONE DROP’s youngest donor, yet to be born Sebastiano joined the ONE DROP movement by donating the proceeds of Mom Elisabetta Caraccia’s baby shower.
