You may have to stand back. Waaaay back. Perhaps even across the street to allow your eyes to appreciate this live creation. Just minutes west of Canada's Parliament Hill is a 13.7 m high by 7.6 m wide mural entitled Accesibilidad para todos (Access to Water for All), gracing the side of the building at 1068 Wellington Street, in the Hintonburg neighbourhood of Ottawa.
World-renowned Nicaraguan artist Julio Cesar Moreno, his assistant Peru Dyer, a Peruvian-Canadian artist, as well as youngsters between the ages of 13 and 17, spent four weeks creating this immense work of art. Needless to say the youngsters, from Glashan Public School and the Hintonburg Community Centre, participated in mural art workshops before starting to apply their talent as painters.
Accesibilidad para todos is intended to raise community awareness of the importance of water-access issues while also beautifying and bringing new life to Hintonburg, a district known for its social and artistic involvement. Aesthetically, the creation is a blend of traditional Latin American mural art with the more urban styles found in North America.
The creation of this ONE DROP mural was rendered possible through a collaboration with MU, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing murals within and for local communities. RBC Foundation and Benjamin Moore were also partners in this undertaking.
