The first gardens have been planted, the first water filters have been distributed, the first performances of the show have taken place—the Honduras Access to Safe Water for the Communities of the Dry Tropics of Honduras project is starting to come to fruition in the field.
After indispensable preparation and planning work, everything is in place for the rainy season just around the corner. Some 250 families now have a customized garden plan and a drinking water filter for their personal consumption. Thirty people from the region have received training to support these families and thus guarantee the sustainability of the project.
The social art and popular education components are also moving right along. Young people have started signing up for workshops offered by the Gota magica (magic drop) centre. Here they will be sensitized to water-related issues by means of puppetry, stilt-walking, juggling, theatre and radio. They will then be able to become agents of change in their community.
A water awareness and mobilization show has just kicked off a regional tour. Titled ¡Canicula! (heat wave), this multidisciplinary show addresses the problems related to droughts and water shortages.
