Honduras: 18 months in the field

Following the recent period of political instability in Honduras, many of you contacted us for news about the Access to Safe Water for the Communities of the Dry Tropics of Honduras project. Tania Vachon, Project Manager at ONE DROP, is back from a field visit where she met with associates, partners and beneficiary families. She has brought back first-hand news about the project.

Preparing for a second harvest

Despite the El Niño phenomenon that caused the drought and makes it difficult to cultivate the land, families are already busy at work preparing gardens for a second harvest. The systems designed to collect rainwater and drip irrigation help fight against drought and provide families with fresh fruits and vegetables.

¡Canicula! tour nearing its end

¡Canicula!, the multidisciplinary show produced by our partner, Teatro Taller Tegucigalpa, will be ending its current tour the week of December 7, 2009, after putting on 85 shows in the villages of Valle, Choluteca and Nacaome, located in southwest Honduras. In all, more than 10,000 people attended this show that raises awareness of the issues related to drought and water shortages and how to better manage the water supply. As of January 2010, a second show will be put together that highlights healthiness.

Ongoing youth workshops for the Gota magica (magic drop)

In addition to juggling and theatre, young people from across the region can now learn all about radio. Eight radio programs on the theme of water have been recorded for broadcast over the airwaves of community radio stations. There are also plans to have beautiful murals painted in several communities where this project is taking place.
