The Nicaragua project: Lifelong benefits

The Water, Culture and Agriculture Project in Nicaragua (or PECAN, the project’s French acronym) is in its consolidation phase. While all project objectives have been reached, the ONE DROP™ team is busy putting the final touches to ensure that acquired skills are preserved and that Nicaraguans can successfully perpetuate the project’s benefits. Tania Vachon, Project Manager at ONE DROP, is back from a field visit where she met with associates, partners and beneficiary families. Here is some news of the project and what’s to come.

HAYTA carries on

A component of ONE DROP’s social art and popular education program, the Teatro y Agua (HAYTA) theatre troupe continues its mission. To date, 130 performances of the multidisciplinary show have raised the awareness of closed to 23 000 people, on issues of water preservation. In cooperation with the Asociación de Promotores de la Cultura (APC), HAYTA designed a website, a logo and a series of brochures to promote its educational creations. Results were almost immediate since the troupe quickly landed two contracts. The first one, with Cumiches, a local organization, made it possible to set up art and educational workshops on the subject of children’s rights and access to water, while the second one will be carried out in partnership with international organization CARE. These new projects will enable HAYTA to go on tour in five departments in Nicaragua and reach close to 3000 people.

Circo Agua Clara becomes a book

Following the success of the show Circo Agua Clara , a children’s book adapted from this show is in the works. The book will seek to explain the causes of drought to children. A teaching guide for facilitators, such as educators and teachers, will also be published. We will provide more information when the book is published.

An important meeting on water, social art and popular education

Finally, for the second time, ONE DROP will hold an international meeting on water, social art and popular education. The meeting will take place in Granada in Nicaragua, from February 24 to 26, 2010. Participants from Canada, Central America and North Africa will take this opportunity to reflect together on ONE DROP projects, draw up guiding principles and share the lessons learned so far from the various experiences.
