The secrets of technology revealed
360° environment and 3D animation
AQUA is designed to be an immersive experience. The 360° circular projection surface is ideal for the concept. Participants are standing in the middle of the room. Thus, they can follow the entire story being told and interact with their neighbours—or even with some of the projected images.
The AQUA concept is very innovative as it is based on the combination of advanced technology and a simple story—that of water—told in images, like a movie, but also in the space surrounding the audience.
The Fly team developed a 360° view in 3D, exclusively for AQUA, which puts the visitor at the centre of the sensory experience. This new technology generates realistic 14-megapixel images for the ten HD projectors, with no distortion and perfect continuity. It really makes individuals feel as though they are at the core of a virtual event.
Interactivity
The interactive wave is one of the scenes of the experience in which participants' movements influence the projection of the wave, which reacts in real time. This gives the unsettling impression of a giant wave in perpetual motion. A sensor detects the movement of visitors and simultaneously reacts on the entire surface.
The exhibition hall will also feature a fog-covered screen for them to wipe and find hidden messages pertaining to ONE DROP's objectives for raising awareness of water-related issues objectives.
Float4 Interactive, which developed the technology required for AQUA's interactive aspects, has created a unique immersive experience. “From a virtual water bottom, the interactivity involves individuals generating waves to splash their neighbours by moving their bodies!”
Projection screens
Due to the proximity of spectators, the type of screen to be used was very important in order to ensure optimal image quality. The screens are made of perforated PVC. The holes allow the passage of the infrared required for the interactive elements.
Water wall
In keeping with ONE DROP's raison d'être, it was essential that water be present in AQUA —and not just in a virtual form. The AQUA experience therefore had to include actual water in liquid form. This was accomplished through the use of a water wall. This “curtain” contains 1,200 litres of water, which is recycled for each screening. The central basin, meanwhile, has a 300-litre capacity.
Drops
Each of the illuminated drops was programmed independently so as to create a unique experience for all participants.
