When you hear that Nicaragua is among the three Central American countries with the lowest human development indexes and a shocking 42.5% of the population lives below the poverty line with a very high child mortality rate (21%), you understand the importance of reaching out. Also, only 59.9% of rural households have adequate access to water and the Estelí region, where Project Nicaragua was implemented, is located in the Dry Tropic zone. The infrequent and irregular rain there has contributed to very-limited access to water and to make matters worse, the region is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events resulting from global climate change.
In Nicaragua, immense water reservoirs were built to collect and store rainwater during the wet season, for use during the dry season. These reservoirs enabled participant farmers to significantly increase their production, generating additional revenue, which benefited their families. Also, children participating in artistic activities created their own theater show at school and toured in neighbouring villages, which was hugely successful. A children’s book inspired by the show was produced and distributed to be used as an educational tool for many more youngsters in the years to come.
I have been participating since 2006. Before this project, I could not grow anything on my land even though it was big enough and had great potential. Now my garden occupies this space and is 6 times bigger than before. I grow vegetables for my family, like tomatoes, onions and cabbages.
