Nicaragua is the second-poorest country in Latin America. The most impoverished farmers live on barely US$360 a year. In addition, 72% of the country’s rural population does not have access to drinking water.
In November 2005, working in cooperation with Oxfam-Québec, the ONE DROP Foundation launched a project to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged rural populations in Estelí, one of Nicaragua’s driest and most mountainous regions, by ensuring a stable supply of water and improving agricultural practices.
To achieve that goal, the project focused on the following activities:
The Water, Culture and Agriculture project in Nicaragua will last at least three years. Thanks to ongoing technical support for the management of reservoirs and family gardens, and to the knowledge and expertise acquired, 10,000 people will be able to achieve a degree of food security and financial confidence, and look to a brighter future.
Objectives of the Nicaragua project and achievements to date
Partnerships are a key part of the Nicaragua project. They make it possible to draw on a wide range of complementary Canadian and Nicaraguan expertise. The Foundation works closely with Oxfam-Québec, Théâtre Parminou, Théâtre de l’Aubergine and six Nicaraguan partners:
Nicaragua Association of Promoters of Culture (APC)
Association of Veterans for Peace and Development (ASOEXCOPADE)
Francisco Rivera Quintero Multisectoral Cooperative
CON-AGRO, an agro-pastoral production consulting business
Women and Community Institute for Social Promotion (IMC)
Movement for Peace, Forest Action and the Environment (MOPAF-MA)
