WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO REACH OUT TO THE PEOPLE OF GUATEMALA?
Tania VachonProject Manager, Latin America

In Guatemala, approximately 54% of the population lives below the national poverty line and 13% lives in extreme poverty. The country is considered to be in a situation of economic water scarcity, which means that renewable water resources in the country are adequate but the institutional and financial resources to allow access to this water are insufficient. The department of Quiché shows the highest levels of poverty in the country and is located in the middle of a dry corridor extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Over the last three years, severe droughts have impacted the region jeopardizing economic development and food security.

OUR KEY STRATEGIES

This project was launched on May 1st 2015 as a joint initiative of ONE DROPTM and Water For People combining their Everyone Forever approach with our A∙B∙C for SustainabilityTM. In order to ensure local ownership and active participation, communities needed to formerly request to participate and municipal governments were required to make a financial commitment. At the end of the project, participating families will benefit from a direct access to safe drinking water through household connections to the aqueduct, a first for One Drop. A market-based approach will be applied to improve access to sanitation and affordable irrigation technologies, notably through the granting of microloans to families and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, various artistic activities such as a multidisciplinary show, travelling giant river snake puppets (a Mayan symbol for water) and a children’s book will be created to raise awareness of WASH related issues.
